VRNS Article: Tips to prevent holiday stress and depression

The holidays can be a time of stress, fatigue and anxiety for many. Try these tips to prevent stress and depression, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in previous years.
Acknowledge your feeling. Be aware of how you feel and what is triggering your feelings.
Do not battle your feelings alone. If you are feeling isolated or alone, seek out community supports. There are many religious and/or other social events that can offer support and companionship. You can also volunteer your time to help others in need to lift your spirit, or reach out to a friend or loved one.
Think realistically. The holidays do not have to be perfect. If old traditions have changed, be open to creating new ones. If you cannot be with your loved ones, try connecting on a virtual call.
Set aside differences. Try to accept family and friends as they are. They are likely feeling the effects of holiday stress, depression and/or fatigue as well.
Stick to a budget. Decide how much money you can afford to spend this holiday and stick to it. Homemade gifts or donating to charity in someone’s name can be good budget saving alternative to help stick to your budget.
Don’t abandon your healthy habits. Don’t forget about your own self-care during the rush of the holidays. Make some time for yourself! Take a breather, go for a walk, eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, get together with loved ones, read a book, listen to soothing music. These are just some ways to reduce stress, clear your mind, and restore your inner calm.
Seek professional help if needed. Despite your best efforts, if you are still feeling lonely, sad or anxious, talk to your doctor or mental health professional.

Stay healthy and well this holiday season!
