The Estate Plan Your Family Can’t Afford to Wait For

Why National Estate Planning Month is the right time to protect the people you love

By Erin L. Nunes, Esq. | Experienced Estate Planning & Elder Law Attorney

October is National Estate Planning Month, a time dedicated to helping families understand one of the most important acts of love and responsibility they can undertake: creating an estate plan.

Yet despite the importance of planning ahead, roughly two-thirds of American adults do not have a will or estate plan in place. Many assume they are too young, do not have enough assets, or will get around to it someday.

Unfortunately, someday does not always arrive on our schedule.

As an estate planning and elder law attorney, I have seen firsthand what happens when families are forced to navigate a crisis without legal documents in place. Instead of focusing on caring for one another, loved ones may be left struggling with court proceedings, financial uncertainty, family disagreements, and difficult medical decisions.

The truth is that estate planning is not about preparing for death. It is about preparing for life.

  • Your loved ones know your wishes.
  • Someone you trust can make decisions if you are unable to.
  • Minor children are cared for by people you choose.
  • Assets pass to the right people efficiently and according to your wishes.
  • Your family avoids unnecessary stress, delays, and expenses.

Many people delay planning because they believe they have plenty of time. Others simply do not know where to start. The good news is that estate planning does not have to be overwhelming.

Think of it as creating a roadmap. If an unexpected event occurs, your family will not be left guessing. They will have clear instructions, legal authority, and peace of mind.

National Estate Planning Month is the perfect reminder to take the first step. Whether you are newly married, raising children, approaching retirement, or helping aging parents, there is never a wrong time to put a plan in place.

The greatest gift you can give your family is not found in a bank account. It is the certainty that they will know exactly what to do when they need guidance the most.

YOUR NEXT STEP: Ready to gain peace of mind? Schedule a planning consultation today and learn how to protect your family’s future.
