The Residence at Cedar Dell: What is respite and when might it be right for you?

By early December the days have become shorter and the weather continues to grow colder, the threat of our first “real” snowfall looming.  For many seniors, maintaining a home throughout the winter months can be challenging.  Seniors and their families worry about snow removal, losing power and unexpected falls due to the icy stairs and pathways left behind after the initial clean up.  As an alternative to remaining housebound throughout the winter months, it may be beneficial to seek a winter respite at a Senior Living community.

Although the process, services and amenities may differ from community to community, many Independent and Assisted Living communities offer respite stays for the winter, or throughout the year, that allow seniors to experience the worry-free and maintenance-free lifestyle of community living without a “permanent” commitment.  Generally offered month to month, respite provides a comfortable and convenient accommodation in a fully furnished apartment with services and amenities such as meals, housekeeping, laundry and transportation included.  Generally, these accommodations can be fully independent or include assistance with activities of daily living, as needed.  Like a permanent resident, respite residents enjoy their own studio or one-bedroom apartment accommodation with a full bath and kitchenette.  Family members are also afforded the peace of mind of knowing that their loved one is in a safe and supervised environment that offers a variety of social programs and opportunities.

Although a convenient solution in the winter months, respite stays are available throughout the year in most communities.  Respite is available to assist families who are going on vacation and need support and supervision for their loved one while they are away.  It can also be beneficial for patients who are leaving a hospital or rehabilitation setting but are not quite ready to return to their home.  Respite stays are also a great way for prospective residents to experience senior living and see if it is the right choice for them.

If you or a loved one are interested in investigating potential respite options, the best way to learn more about the specifics for each community and their current availability is to meet with a Sales Representative and tour the community.  From there, enjoy the benefits and peace of mind that a respite stay can afford to you in the community of your choice!
