Meet the Guardian Duck—The Secret to Feeling Secure

As we kick off Feel Good February, we’re starting with the foundation of any great plan: the people. We call this first step The Guardian Duck

While estate planning often brings to mind stacks of paper and legal jargon, the Guardian Duck represents something much simpler and more human—security. It’s the peace of mind that comes from knowing that if you ever face a moment where you can’t speak for yourself, the people you trust most are already empowered to step in and help.

What is the Guardian Duck?

The Guardian Duck focuses on appointing your “helpers.” These are the individuals who will manage your finances, make medical decisions, and care for your children if you are temporarily or permanently unable to do so.

To get this “duck” in a row, we focus on three essential pillars:

  1. Power of Attorney: Appointing someone to handle your financial affairs and legal decisions.
  1. Healthcare Proxy: Designating a person to make medical decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated.
  1. Guardianship: Ensuring that if you have minor children, there is a clear, legal plan for who will raise them.

The “Feel-Good” Factor

Why does this make you feel good? Because uncertainty is a weight. When you haven’t named your helpers, that weight sits in the back of your mind: “What would happen to my kids? Who would pay my mortgage? Would my doctors know who to call?”

By “lining up” your Guardian Duck, you replace that heavy uncertainty with a profound sense of security. You aren’t just signing documents; you are creating a safety net for yourself and a roadmap for your family.

Small Steps for Big Relief

Getting started doesn’t have to be overwhelming. This week, we encourage you to simply start the conversation.

  • Identify your team: Who are the most trustworthy, level-headed people in your life?
  • Ask for permission: Reach out and ask if they would be willing to serve as your proxy or power of attorney.
  • Check your current documents: If you haven’t updated these in over five years, your Guardian Duck might be out of alignment!
